So, this morning I was surfing the web and came across this here article through yahoo...
Yes, its true, they are close to being able to give women who have damaged wombs for whatever reason a transplant so that they too can enjoy the miracle of birth firsthand, making surrogacy unnecessary. Awesome right?
Then my dear colleague Sofie goes quiet for a bit...and then exclaims:
"THEN MEN CAN FINALLY GIVE BIRTH!" She looked ecstatic thinking up the possibilities..."I could run up to a man, kick him in the balls then he could become a woman, have the transplant and finally FINALLY we would be able to find out which is more painful: a kick in the nuts or childbirth!"
Later when my boss arrived for work we asked him "If you could have a womb and give birth, would you?" With absolutely no hesitation he replied "Hell no, I would have it cut out, TOO POSH TO PUSH!"

So today I had a rather bad critique from my lecturers regarding my animation and one other video projects. I mean, I know the other project was not amazing, since I pretty much spent only 2 days on it, but I was in no way expecting the razorsharp gutting that I received.
The worst part was that every single word the lecturers said against it, was true. Basically it was all to do with the part of me that hates to be expected to be an artist and "develop" ideas. Lol... I like being given strict boundaries, and very clear guidelines so that I can then go nuts within those guidelines, coz I always manage to.
For me I need to know what the box is before I can think outside it.
All in all it was a pretty shitty Monday morning, and afterwards I can't help but doubt myself here. Was I perhaps not ready for an MA after all? Is this just maybe maybe maybe one of those cases like them girls trying out for American Idol, where all their family says they can sing, and their mates all tell them they are amazing, and they spend hours and hours singing along to their fave tracks, and weeks in karaoke bars and truly believe they have talent, only to discover in front of Simon Cowell that they are in fact talentless dogs, who have been pitied by their mates all along. Not that their mates would know anyway...
I have had guidance and encouragement from industry people, but...they have been my friends. Not to say that it doesnt mean as much, but...fuck, you know what I mean. The doubt has crept in once again, that just perhaps animation isnt really what I should be doing, and that being able to draw is not necessarily gonna make me my millions?
Just maybe I should get a real job? That just maybe I am just not good enough to... "make" it...? Ugh, this is the trouble with pursuing your dreams, gotta be ready to hear criticism...and damn it can be harsh sometimes... I wasn't ready for it. At all...:(
Some people would say stop be a pussy, come on, toughen up, you will never make your mills if you give up so easily and crack under such little pressure...but I seem to be running into the same wall again and again and eventually I might have to walk around it and go a different way.
Storyboards are due in on Friday, lets hope that presentation goes better and helps me get my moxie back eh?
More work done.

Hey guys, so recently this blog has been a little too emo for my own liking, so I woke up this morning and decided to hell with that, its time to bring it back to the main thing, my work.
I was gonna erase all my emo ramblings off here to stop any future employers from accidentally realizing how mental I actually am at times, but then again, maybe they do need a warning, or maybe they will realise that I am one of those creative types who tends to do MORE work as opposed to less in the midst of an existential crisis. I just get better ideas through a haze of pain:D
ANYWAY. I am doing good right now. Took me a couple of weeks to fight through a cold and break and I am now, back on top of the world. I have regained my precarious perch on the throne:D
And so here is some of the stuff I have been up to over the past few weeks:)
First up is a project I am working on for my step brother and now employer. He has recently started up a company (Ymir Mobile) that creates games and software for mobile phones and I am now one of their designers! So he hired me to design some characters for one of them there games.

I created the whole thing in photoshop, just scanned in some rough sketches then painted with my trusty Wacom. I seriously cannot wait until January though, which is when I am going to be investing in a CINTIQ (check em out here...)
Next up is some concept art for a storyboard I am creating for my MA, we have to make 3 production bibles for January and one of them has to be based on a fairytale. I went and dug up one of the darkest I could find in Irish history and am looking forward to getting cracking on the storyboard for it, just as soon as I get a minute! Until then, here's the seamaid!

FInally theres a little something I was messing around with, am trying to get this new design feel worked out and was trying out vectors and shapes and stuff.

Oh and btw I just subscribed to the COOLEST magazine like EVER. Its called ImagineFX, they do have a website as well, and its all about concept art and illustration and its AMAAAAAAAAAAZING. Am seriously in love with it. I want to have its babies.
I have also been doing some makeup lately for photoshoots for a friend, and its been damn fun. You can see the shots on modelmayhem.com which is incidentally also a damn good website for photographers, models and makeup artists to network.
And and and...I have finally almost finished the pencils and inks for another comic, which will be set up as a webcomic by February next year, so keep your eyes peeled folks, theres so much happening!!!!

This is just a test run of my new apple keyboard. OMG isnt it the sexiest sleekest motherfucker you ever saw????
Its so beautiful and slim. Quiet...easy to clean...my wrists arent half in the air....man its so ergonomic and wonderful. And the keys have this really nice texture to them...sigh. This will be bliss to work on! It has only one issue that I have noticed which might be due to the fact that this is a British and not a US keyboard, so the shift key on the left is slightly shorter. I can live with it. In fact my little finger is already getting used to it.
Good stuff.
And all for 29 quid. Yay!

I still havent seen it on TV, it would be on ntv7 or 8tv, so if yall see it, let me know, but otherwise, I mean at least I did get paid for it:D My first paying job in animation;P Disclaimer: If you just read a whole ton of stuff you didn't wanna read and you wish you could just bypass the ramblings and see my latest work and inspiration, now you can! Last night my housemate Agusta was hired as an extra for a commercial. The brief was that it was a mattress ad and that there would be an elephant acting in it....!!!! Apparently the production company is called Applebox and the ad was Italian.
Upon hearing that I was THERE. She couldnt shake me, I was like, yes I am coming along and bringing my camera and thats the end of that. So we took the train down to KL and the shoot was at Bukit Jalil LRT station.

And there was the elephant! They were doing a few shots first against a green screen and my first thought was, isn't that a rather small elephant? Hmmm... turned out to be a good thing it wasnt bigger though.

After the elephant was done with his bit, there was a little girl dancing around against the blue screen in a ballerina costume...very odd but yeah ok.
Finally we waited for Agusta's part.
And waited.
And waited.
After 4 HOURS it was finally time for the extras to sit in front of a huge projector with the elephant and pretend everyone is watching a movie, although what this has to do with mattresses I do not know.
The little ballerina girl was sitting on the elephant and so was one other boy, and there were people all seated around, quite closely to the elephant. My housemate was somewhere towards the back.
I was chatting away with the wife of another of the extras and we were pretty into our conversation when disaster struck.
A loud bang (probably from one of the crew dropping some equipment or something) spooked the elephant and up it went throwing the little girl onto the floor. She went flying I tell you.
Another man went flying as well when the elephant kicked him in the arm.
People were screaming, children were running, it was bloody terrifying.... the elephant was stampeding and I am telling you it happened damn fast but it took quite a while for everything to calm down.
Both the children were fine, thank god but I somehow doubt either of them will ever go near an elephant again, let alone riding on its back... The poor things were already scared apparently before the incident.
The man who got kicked had a broken arm, and was promptly deposited near a bucket of ice, and the ambulance showed up about 1 hour later (go malaysia).
So yeah and the shoot was over after that. Man, apparently the poor elephant had been shooting for 3 days. I doubt they fed it much, coz it sure wasnt pooping anywhere. It was doing that whole distressed animal thing where they sway their heads from side to side constantly, there were people everywhere, I mean it was a train station. So you had trains going back and forth all the time as well.
Its not a big stretch that something would happen. And after all that stress to the poor elephant they load it up with 2 kids and surround with people and flickering lights...?!
Ha!
Ah well, we survived this as well:) Such drama here in Malaysia!
Smooches!

I have been banished to my room. Downstairs my housemates are preparing something. They have laid the table with the smiley face tablecloth and I can hear the sounds of party thingies going on.
To be honest I have absolutely nothing in my room to do. Or is that me just being a petulant child just like when I was 5. I actually feel just like I am 5 right now. Hahaha...
But I am so not. Today I turned 28 years old. And I cannot believe it. I still feel like 28 is so impossibly old. I...am not impossibly old. I am still...well...me.
I am not a middle aged wife and mother who works writing childrens books. I am not living comfortably in a big house in the country with 2 cats, 1 dog and a donkey. I am still a student, living in Malaysia, in a house with 3 other girls. Am still single, still kona einsömul (icelandic term, it doesnt translate well).
My life has in no way turned out the way I thought it would when I was younger. But the thing is when I was younger I had no idea about the amount of options that are out there!
My life has so far been more of an adventure than my tiny little mind could ever imagine when I was young. But I thought at that time I was pretty smart. Only now do I realise how little I actually know and that ...
Oh crap, the girls got me and we just had some yummy dinner and I totally cant remember what I was saying...hahahah! Am getting senile!
Hugs and smooches from the Queen of Helenasia:D
Today I went to the front to print (for 200 bucks...grrr) and while I was sitting there drooling over each A3 glossy color illustration as it oozed out of the printer I remembered my train of thought yesterday.
I have realized that now I can create the artwork I dreamed of being able to make when I was a kid. I can make all the animations, designs and cartoons.
But also along the way I have realized that theres a whole lot more to it. And that it can be soooo much better than this!
I guess I have reached one of my childhood goals, only to realize that the finish line is in fact the start of a new race.
Game on.
Oh and this one almost made me come when it came out of the printer. Yes I have a fetish for freshly printed color...ahahaha...

Guess my maturity still has to catch up. Disclaimer: If you just read a whole ton of stuff you didn't wanna read and you wish you could just bypass the ramblings and see my latest work and inspiration, now you can! Visit The Ultimate Creations of Helenasia and all your dreams can come true!
